Employers are under a duty to provide "such number of suitable persons as is adequate and appropriate for rendering first-aid to his employees ...... and for this purpose, a person shall not be suitable unless he has undergone such training ...... as the Health and Safety Executive may approve". Generally speaking, risk workplaces like offices, shops and libraries with less than 50 employees need not have a fully qualified First-Aider but can make do with an ‘Appointed Person' only. Factories are classed differently according to risk assessment and the ratio is between one First Aider to 20 and one to 5 employees depending on the risk category.This course is being run on the Chamber's behalf by St John Ambulance who will issue ‘Appointed Person' certificates to successful candidates.
